Our Approach
Inspired by the Kodály and Colourstrings approach, these classes aim to help children develop musical skills through singing, playing and learning songs, rhymes and percussion instruments. We strive to be inclusive and to also expose the children to a diverse range of music and authors.
Zoltan Kodály believed in starting musical training as early as possible, not only nine months before the birth of the child, but even, as he once said, nine months before the birth of the parent! Early childhood education has always been a top priority for Kodály educators.
Colourstrings Kindergarten focuses on pre-instrumental learning - setting children up with all of the skills they will need to learn an instrument by giving them a strong bank of well known songs through which they learn and understand important musical concepts.
As well as being fun and engaging, we offer a high quality, structured and progressive music education for early years children. Attending the classes develops a strong musical foundation on which to base any future music learning.
As well as developing musical skills, other skills in a child's early years development are enhanced. Research shows that actively learning music as a young child can help to develop:
Language, literacy and numeracy skills
Social and emotional development
Confidence
Motor skills and co-ordination
Listening skills
Creativity and imagination
Live instruments play an important part of the child's experience. In every class, children will experience the sound of a live instrument and where possible get to have a turn at playing it.
